Friðrik A. Jónsson founded his company in 1942, when the company turned 70 in 2012. Friðrik first worked with radio and film showcases, and then developed his business into telecommunications, navigation and fishing gear. The company has been a leader in its field and been owned by the same family until the owners of Marás bought it in 2006.

Fridrik started working with Willy Simonsen who founded Simonsen Radio a.s. in Norway, which later received the name Simrad, which is one of the best-known brands in the fishing industry today.

During the herring years there was a breakthrough in herring fishing when Friðrik placed on the Icelandic market the first Simrad sonar (Astik) which at that time was placed in all the major herring vessels in Iceland and was the beginning of the strong position of Friðrik A. Jónsson ehf. and Simrad in Iceland.
