Communication Systems for RoPax Ferries: Jantar Unity Case Study

Communication Systems for RoPax Ferries play a critical role onboard the Jantar Unity, a new generation Polish-built Baltic vessel combining sustainable propulsion, advanced manoeuvrability, and integrated onboard solutions. Delivered in December 2025, the ferry operates between Świnoujście and Sweden, supporting safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible operations.

Designed for modern Baltic transport requirements, the vessel reflects how reliable communication infrastructure underpins everyday ferry performance and compliance.

A Flagship of Polish Engineering

The Jantar Unity RoPax ferry is setting a new standard for ferry travel between Poland and Sweden. Delivered in December 2025 and built at REMONTOWA Holding in Gdańsk, this modern Baltic RoPax vessel is the first of three state-of-the-art sister ships serving the Świnoujście–Trelleborg and Świnoujście–Ystad routes. At 195.6 meters long and 32.2 meters wide, it accommodates 400 passengers and 4,100 meters of lane space — enough for around 270 trucks. Capable of speeds up to 19 knots, the ferry completes the journey in just 6.5 hours, combining operational efficiency with environmentally responsible performance.

Modern, Sustainable Propulsion

The vessel is powered by a hybrid LNG–battery system designed for reduced emissions, lower noise, and high manoeuvrability. Two 360° azimuth thrusters, supported by additional bow thrusters, allow precise positioning, sideways movement, and on-thespot rotation, reducing the need for tug assistance and enhancing operational flexibility.

Integrated Communication Systems for RoPax Ferries

Reliable communication is critical for modern RoPax vessels, and Jantar Unity features a fully integrated system designed for continuous availability under all conditions. This includes:

  • UHF radios with Distributed Antenna System (DAS)
  • IP-based EXIGO public address system
  • ICS 6200 digital telephony
  • Batteryless VSP telephones.

Enamor Sp. z o.o. supported the implementation of these systems in Poland, contributing to seamless coordination across public announcements, alarms, and internal communications. Together, these technologies provide redundancy and reliability essential for everyday operations and emergency scenarios alike.

Safety and Reliability – SRTP Compliance

Meeting the strict Safe Return to Port (SRTP) requirements, the vessel remains operational long enough to return safely in the event of an incident. Its integrated communication systems provide continuous connectivity between bridge, engine, and control areas, supporting crew coordination and passenger safety at all times.

A Milestone in Baltic Ferry Travel

Jantar Unity represents a major step forward in Baltic maritime transport. By combining sustainable propulsion, advanced manoeuvrability, and reliable communication systems, it delivers a safe, efficient, and modern travel experience. As one of the most advanced RoPax ferries in Europe, it demonstrates the capabilities of Polish shipbuilding and sets a benchmark for the future of regional ferry operations.
