Zenitel Takes Part in Coast Guard Vessel Upgrades Program
The Canadian Coast Guard plays a crucial role in ensuring safety and environmental protection. However, the fleet is in dire need of renewal as many vessels are reaching the end of their service life. To address this issue, the Government of Canada has launched an extensive program aimed at equipping the Coast Guard with modern, reliable vessels capable of operating seamlessly in harsh conditions.
Contribution to Coast Guard Vessel Upgrades:
Zenitel is proud to be part of the Coast Guard Vessel Upgrades Program. In collaboration with our partners, we are supplying critical communication systems for the new state-of-the-art vessels. This specially designed suite of products meets all the stringent requirements and communication needs of the Canadian Coast Guard.
Innovative Vessels: The Foundation of the Modern Fleet
The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) operates in harsh marine environments, facing extreme weather conditions that are expected to worsen due to climate changes. To effectively address these challenges, the Government of Canada is investing C$15.7 billion in fleet renewal. A significant part of this extensive program is the creation of a new fleet of multi-purpose vessels (MPVs) and the construction of new icebreakers.
Details on the New Fleet and Upgrades
The first six MPVs will be versatile Polar Class 4 icebreaking vessels, built by Seaspan Shipyards. These ships are specifically designed to perform complex multi-purpose tasks in challenging conditions. With the MPVs, the Coast Guard will be able to assist in search and rescue, conduct icebreaking, towing, environmental response, and more. The new vessels will be able to accommodate up to 50 crew members, and their size will allow them to operate not only at sea but also in rivers and lakes.
The construction of new icebreakers as part of the program has been entrusted to Chantier Davie. The company will create six modern, innovative vessels to replace the aging fleet.
Critical Communications as the Foundation of Efficiency and Safety
Zenitel has all needed capabilities and experience to equip modern vessels for this remarkable program with a complete onboard communications package.

Impact on Canadian Coast Guard Operations
The outdated fleet not only limited the Coast Guard's ability to effectively carry out its duties but also became increasingly expensive to maintain, leading to rising costs. The Canadian Coast Guard Vessel Upgrades Program is set to significantly enhance CCG’s mission capabilities with a modernized fleet. This strategic renewal is crucial for maintaining national security and protecting marine environments. The modern vessels will ensure long-term operational efficiency, bolstering the CCG’s ability to respond to emergencies, enforce regulations, and conduct search and rescue missions more effectively.
The Canadian Coast Guard Vessel Upgrades Programplays an important role in the development of Canada's economy and also helps build a sustainable marine sector.
